New York Hot Dogs
A vendor style New York hot dog that comes topped with a delicious onion sauce.

6 hot dog buns
For onion sauce:
3 yellow onions, peeled and sliced
1/3 cup/80 mL prepared marinara or tomato sauce
1/2 cup/120 mL water
3 cloves garlic, minced
2 tablespoons/30 mL oil
2 tablespoons/30 mL paprika
1 teaspoon/5 mL brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon/2.5 mL cayenne (optional)
1/2 teaspoon/2.5 mL salt
1/2 teaspoon/2.5 mL black pepper
dash of cinnamon
In a large pan, heat oil. Add sliced onion and cook for 3-5 minutes. Add garlic and cook for additional 2 minutes, stirring often. Add tomato sauce (or marinara), water, and remaining ingredients, and allow mixture to simmer for 15-20 minutes.
Preheat grill for medium heat. Place hot dogs onto grill and cook for 6-8 minutes turning often. Once hot dogs are cooked through, remove from grill, place into warmed hot dog buns and top with onion sauce.
