I’m a fifties girl and dang proud of it. I feel I was born at “just the right time” – able to see the wonderful things after WWII - the family life, the caring, the sharing – Korean War, Viet Nam, the cold War - not so nice.
Alaska and Hawaii were added to our nation giving us our present 50 states and a new flag with 50 stars.
Economically, our country was growing. Proud Americans.
Beatniks and the Beat Generation was at an all time high.
The helica structure of DNA was discovered in ’53. So was Hugh Hefner’s Playboy magazine.
Polio vaccine in ’55.
Organ transplants in ’54.
Disneyland opened in ’55.
In 1957, the Sputnik went to heaven. (easy way to remember the date, huh?) Then the Explorer was sent next – the start of the space race.
IBM developed Fortran (computer language.)
And thank heaven for NORAD in ’59 – at least we can now track Santa Claus!
Capris, poodle skirts, Bill Haley and the Comets, Chuck Berry, Fats Domino, American Bandstand – Marilyn Monroe, Jane Russell, James Dean. Oh the wonderful memories.
We learned to use our imaginations for playtime with our friends – and our friends were REAL people – not the unseen faces on a computer. We showed respect for others – we learned the old-fashioned way – by studying and doing it. Didn’t need expensive calculators or computer programs to do our homework. We used our brains. Actual brain cells.
You went to church on Sunday and spent the rest of the day with family having huge Sunday/family dinners. No malls, no 24-hour convenience stores – the good old days.
Oh I can go on and on –
But I’d like to share 50’s recipes – from the days when women really cooked! And cooked with love!
