A Slave now coming in October

Watch The Purge Online So Pixar is changing their ways and now promises to get back to telling original stories. That is, after all, why we loved them in the first place. This couldn’t have been an easy decision. Their most recent efforts haven’t been particularly good, but they’ve been huge moneymakers. Cars 2 with its deplorable 39% rating on Rotten Tomatoes made more than half a million at the box office worldwide. But Catmull says… For artistic reasons … it’s really important that we do an original film a year. Every once in a while, we get a film where we want or people want to see something continuing in that world — which is the rationale behind the sequel. They want those characters, which means we were successful with them. But if you keep doing that, then you aren’t doing original films.

Watch Iron Man 3 Online In the past the Pixar team had been adamant that they’d only make sequels if they had a story which demanded to be made. That resulted in Toy Story 2 and Toy Story 3, each movie better than the last. Somewhere along the way that policy fell by the wayside and they started just making sequels that seemed like they’d be profitable. Whatever you think of Monsters University (most seem to agree that it’s at least sort of OK) it’s hard to make a case for a Revenge of the Nerds style knockoff being a story that demands to be made.

Watch After Earth Online To put it kindly, Cars 2 wasn’t good. And their subsequent films haven’t been as good either. While the studio’s offerings continue to make gobs of cash, nearly everyone agrees they aren’t as good as they once were. Even they seem to see that there’s a problem. So they’re making changes. Pixar Animation Studios president Ed Catmull tells Buzzfeed that the studio plans to significantly scale back on its production of sequels. It was an over-emphasis on sequels which got them in trouble, in the first place.

Watch World War Z Online Here's hoping it works out that way. We'll find out July 12 when Pacific Rim arrives in theaters. In addition to Hunnam and Kikuchi, the film features Idris Elba, Charlie Day, Robert Kazinsky, Max Martini and Hunnam's Sons co-star Ron Perlman. In other Pacific Rim news, those who need a bit of musical incentive to whet their appetite for this exciting looking film can listen to the full soundtrack over at Spotify for free. The score for the movie was composed by Ramin Djawadi, who did music for Prison Break, Iron Man and Game of Thrones. The first track alone should do the trick in getting moviegoers amped for this film to hit theaters. Those who want to buy the soundtrack can find it available for download at Amazon for $8.99, or a dollar more over at iTunes. (Heads up to the more thriftier music purchasers out there, Amazon mp3s can be downloaded and imported into iTunes.)

Watch Snitch Online The mandate of sequels tends to be bigger, bolder, and flashier. But when your first movie contained massive meatballs, gargantuan ice cream scoops, and twisters of spaghetti, how do you top that? This was the question facing Cody Cameron and Kris Pearn, the directors of Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2. And for them the answer was simple: sentient food. In the finale of the first Cloudy, Flint Lockwood and his friends had to confront the next step in evolution of the onslaught of food that had been birthed by his FLDSMDFR (A.K.A. Flint Lockwood Diatonic Super Mutating Dynamic Food Replicator), namely slices of pizza and gummi bears that purposefully attack! But in Lockwood's next adventure, things have gotten way wilder back at Swallow Falls with the rise of foodimals! (You can see a bunch of them above in Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2's Jurassic Park-style reveal.)

Watch A Good Day To Die Hard Online In Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim, Sons of Anarchy's Charlie Hunnam will trade in his bike for a Jaeger, a massive robot built to defend earth and humanity against the monsters called Kaiju, who've crawled out of the ocean and invaded the world, repeatedly attacking it and forcing man to fight back with machines. As MTV explained it when they shared the above clip, in order to operate the Jaegers, the two pilots' minds must be melded to form a synchronicity. So naturally, a pilot must find a compatible co-pilot with whom to team up with. And it looks like Becket sees something he likes in Mako Mori, who proves to be particularly efficient with a bo staff. As the trailer revealed to us, the process of mind-melding not only means that their minds are connected, but so are their memories. It sounds like an incredibly intimate connection and one that could yield a really great character bond in the film, taking Pacific Rim from being a great alien-attack/robots vs. monsters movie and adding in a fantastic character story as these two pilots get to know one another in an intense kind of way.

So with 12 Years A Slave now coming October 18, we can now assume that Fox Searchlight hopes it will perform much better with bigger audiences than Hunger (opened 12/5/2008; less than $150,000 total domestic cross) or Shame (opened 12/2/2011; $3.9 million total gross). Is Steve McQueen about to become as big a household name as Steve McQueen? He's at least on the right track. Between the years of 1995 and 2010 Pixar released eleven feature films. None of them received less than a 74% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, most averaged well into the 90s. They racked up an impressive list of awards and accolades, quickly solidifying as not just the best animation studio in Hollywood, but maybe also the best story tellers in the movie industry. That run ended in 2011 with the release of Cars 2. That might seem noble, but I think it’s a financially sound decision, too. Sure their unnecessary sequels have been making gobs of money, but they’re also damaging their reputation. That may not hurt them this year or even next year, but it will hurt them eventually. In the long run they’ll end up making less money, because of it. For Pixar to keep being Pixar, they need to refocus on what it was that made them great in the first place: Original storytelling.
