De Zwaan Cafe Dutch Apple Cake
Cafe de Zwaan, Maastricht, Netherlands. You won't have to travel abroad to enjoy this restaurants' famous dessert from a well-known eatery with fabulous foods and friendly service.

Made with sugar, eggs, applesauce, all-purpose flour, ground cinnamon, baking soda, salt, ground cloves, apples, raisins - old fashioned goodness!

1/2 cup butter or margarine, softened
1 cup sugar
2 eggs
1 1/4 cup applesauce
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
2 medium apples, peeled and very finely chopped
1 cup raisins
1 cup pecans, chopped

GARNISH
powdered sugar
ice cream
OR
whipped cream


In a mixing bowl, beat together the butter or margarine, sugar and eggs with an electric mixer until light and fluffy. Add applesauce and beat until combined.

Stir together the flour, cinnamon, baking soda, salt and cloves. Stir into beaten mixture just until combined. Stir in the chopped apples, raisins and chopped pecans.

Turn batter into a greased 13 x 9 x 2 inch baking pan. Bake in a 350 degrees F oven for 30 to 35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean when inserted in center and top springs back when pressed lightly. Cool slightly and cut into squares.

Serve sprinkled with powdered sugar or topped with ice cream or whipped cream.
