Ransomware - virus

I got this today from my bank and just wanted to share with you -

An important message regarding Ransomware.

At M&T Bank, we’re committed to helping you protect your personal and financial information. Part of that commitment includes helping you stay informed of fraud scams so you can better identify, reduce and mitigate your risk.

One type of fraud that’s on the rise is Ransomware - a type of malware that, when activated, encrypts all of the files on a computer or network.

To regain access to the files, the cybercriminal demands a ransom, usually to be paid with electronic currency such as bitcoin. Paying the ransom, however, does not guarantee all the files will be unlocked and accessible or that another future ransom attack will not occur.

Tips to help prevent the infection and spread of Ransomware:
• Don’t click on links or open attachments in emails from unsolicited, suspicious or unknown sources
• Regularly update the software on your devices by installing the latest security patches
• Configure your anti-virus software to auto-update and regularly scan your devices

For more information on these and other scams, call 1-800-790-9130 or visit mtb.com/security or the Federal Trade Commission website at ftc.gov.
Thank you for banking with M&T.
