Can someone explain how this is legal for Virgin to do? (Rasputin)

If I book a train ticket from Preston to London Euston the first off peak trains I can catch are 0930 down and then the last one up is 1430 ish... Cost £90 If I wish to travel outside of these times I need peak tickets which are about £240!!! Now if I get..
