Backing up/saving apps: did I do it wrong... (dirtyvest)

... or is this just how it is? Basically my son's tablet needed replacing today so before we took it back I used the App backup to, in theory, save his apps (games) and progress, especially as I had paid to upgrade a couple of them. So got the replacement..
