Watch Fast and Furious 6 Online : Its that pervasive question that makes Hotline Miami stand out from the sea of shooter games on todays market. But dont be fooled; the developers are perfectly comfortable with letting you run wild, ignoring all the lingering questions and potential answers. If youre anything like the protagonist of Hotline Miami, youll be content with killing, without reason, remorse, and often, without thinking. But even without the trippy story, which walks a fine line between non-existent and uncompromisingly confusing, Hotline Miami excels in the art of killing. And my god is it fun to kill.
Watch Despicable Me 2 Online : The game opens with our nameless protagonist (who fans commonly refer to as Jacket, because of the letterman jacket he sports) standing in a dark room. As he moves forward, three men donning animal masks confront him, posing vague and cryptic questions regarding your thoughts, actions and identity. You barely have enough time to contemplate it, as the screen fades away and you wake up in a dingy Miami apartment in April of 1989. Almost immediately, the blinking light of the answering machine catches your eye.
Watch This is the End Online : This is the cycle that drives much of the game forward; a brief message tasks you with cleaning up or paying a visit to a specific address, which is followed up by a killing spree perpetrated by well, you. You control Jacket much like you would in a dual stick shooter, with analog sticks controlling both movement and aim. While the original PC version also supported mouse and keyboard, both the PS3 and Vita ports rely solely on the twin-stick setup, but they work well enough. The L1/R1 triggers are used for firing, picking up, and throwing weapons, while the secondary triggers allow you to lock on to enemies and pan the camera to see beyond your normal field of vision.
Watch Monsters University Online : On the Vita, the secondary triggers are replaced by the touchscreen, and while it can be hectic to manage the thumbsticks and touchscreen during a frantic fight, the touch controls do allow for more precision. Before the start of each level, Jacket chooses from a suite of masks, each of which has a unique and useful perk. For example, donning the Graham the Rabbit mask allows you to move around the stage more quickly, while the Don Juan the Horse mask makes doors lethal should you open one on an enemy. Its a nice way of catering to your playstyle, and they serve a great complement to the already varied combat system.
Watch The Purge Online : Weapons include both traditional and improvised melee weapons, from baseball bats and knives to scissors and frying pans. Melee combat has the added bonus of not only being silent, but allows you to throw each weapon as a projectile, which is useful for stunning enemies and chaining together combos. Granted, firearms are just as deadly, and can quickly rack up a body count and high combo, but every gun (unless its silenced) will attract a large crowd, and quickly. Enemies react to the traditional stimuli; doors opening, large noises, and of course, entering their field of view, but for the most part, they patrol hallways in a clear pattern.
Watch Now You See Me Online : While they might not be the most intelligible of enemies, they make up for it with their large numbers and force. It works well in the games favor; while enemies will usually go down in one hit or one shot, the same goes for you, meaning your patience will be just as important as your raw skill. It makes for a great tug-of-war system; do you go in weapons swinging in order to rack up a higher score, or do you play it safe and wait it out around corners, sacrificing a higher score for self-preservation. Still, you should learn to embrace death quickly, as youll die a lot. But like other indie titles, namely Super Meat Boy, youll learn from each death, and thankfully, a quick button press gets you right back into the action. Checkpoints are reached when you eliminate everyone on a floor and have moved on to the next, meaning you wont be spending too much time playing the same area over and over. Still, Hotline Miami does stumble occasionally, though it doesnt greatly impact the overall experience. A standalone stealth level, while tense in its own way, feels very sluggish compared to the rest of the game, and you wont be inclined to replay it after its initial completion. Boss fights, which break up the pacing when needed, force you to watch the same dialogue unfold after each death, so expect to mash on the controller to skip a cutscene again and again.
Even with its flaws, its easy to forgive Hotline Miami, mostly due to its presentation. The soundtrack, which was one of the highlights of last years PC release, is in full swing here. The music is a mix of both hazy psychedelic tunes and fast-paced pop-electronic. It fits the 80s aesthetic perfectly, and is rounded out by outstanding visual design, complete with scan lines and flashes, all held together by an overload of neon colors. It all feels like an homage to the drug and dance culture of the 80s, and Hotline Miami pays tribute to more than a handful of crime films (even going so far as to specifically thank Nicolas Winding Refn, the director of the neo-noir crime drama film Drive, in the games credits). Like a drug-fueled rampage, Hotline Miami is over in a flash, but despite its brevity, its as memorable as ever. While the games ending might irk those who dont look beneath the surface, dedicated gamers who pick away at the obscurity will be rewarded with all the meta-narrative references that the mind can handle. Still, even with its deliberately ambiguous plot, Hotline Miami can still be enjoyed for what it is; a retro-cool massacre simulator. The story of Hotline Miami is one for debate as there are multiple interpretations to the various events of the game. The whole story is told from multiple perspectives with little regards to chronological order. Given that there is also a possibility of many of the events being drug induced nightmares that never really happened; its easy to say that the story is ambiguous at best.
There are also masks that unlock by finishing stages, or even found lying around in the missions themselves, and they serve to add certain modifiers to the nameless protagonists abilities. Some masks come with traits that dramatically affect the combat by making punches instant kills or bring a more subtle effect like being able to see secrets in the stages easier. My personal favorite mask was one that gave me the ability to instantly kill enemies by bashing them with a door. It was a common strategy for me to fire some shots on the other side of a room near a door to lure enemies into a doorway so I could take them out one at a time without letting them even take a shot at me. Failing over and over again on a stage only to go back to the very beginning to change the mask that I was wearing and succeed only a few tries later really showed me the great role strategy played in this seemingly action only title.
